Orlane B21: what it is and who it's for

If you remember Orlane from the beauty hours, B21 is the part of the line worth understanding before you spend anything.

Orlane was founded in Paris in 1947 and still makes every formula in its own labs near Orléans. B21 is its anti-aging program, and it is the most expensive thing the brand sells. Orlane builds the whole range around one patented ingredient complex of its own, which it calls the Youth Reset Complex.

The rest of the brand's page is the brand's language, not mine. What I can tell you plainly is what is in the range, what each piece costs, and where the honest snags are.

There is no cheap way into B21, and the brand does not pretend otherwise. The $70 steps are a toning lotion, a cleanser and a scrub. They are the supporting cast. The argument for the line lives in the serum and the creams, and those start at $290.

The hero. B21 Extraordinaire Youth Reset Serum, $290. This is the product the line is named for. Orlane describes it as "a silky, creamy-velvety serum with refined glide that melts seamlessly into skin," and says one pump covers the whole face. Orlane's own instruction is morning and evening, on face and neck, before your cream. The size is not printed on the product page; Neiman Marcus lists it at 1 oz.

The splurge. B21 Renaissance Cream, $480. The most expensive item Orlane sells on its own site. If you have circled this for years, the only sensible time to buy it is a real sitewide sale.

The entry point. B21 Neck and Décolleté Lifting Cream, $160. This is the least painful way to find out whether B21 suits you and still be using an actual treatment rather than a cleanser. It is also the area a face routine usually forgets.

Buy the cream, not the serum.

Two reasons, both practical. The Youth Reset Serum was out of stock at orlane.com when I checked, along with the Absolute Youth Eye. And Orlane's own instruction for the Absolute Youth Cream, $290, is "apply morning and evening to the face and neck," then adds that you use it after the serum "for enhanced performance." The serum improves the cream. The cream works without the serum.

Orlane describes that cream as "a rich, velvety cream that envelops the skin in deep comfort." Rich is the operative word.

Dry or mature skin that wants a heavier texture and does not mind a classic French-cream feel. Someone who will actually finish the jar rather than rotate it with four other things.

Named as people: the woman whose skin feels tight by mid-afternoon in a heated house. The one who has quietly used the same expensive cream since the beauty hours and wants to know if it is still the right one. The one buying one serious jar a year instead of six small ones.

Two caveats, and the second one matters more than people expect.

Fragrance. Orlane products are scented in the traditional French way. An independent ingredient database lists fragrance in the Absolute Youth Cream's INCI. [verify against the carton] If you need fragrance-free, this is not your line, and I would rather tell you now than have you open a $290 jar.

The return policy. Orlane accepts returns within 30 days of receipt, but only if the item comes back "unopened, unused, and with all seals, tags, and packaging intact." Return shipping is yours unless the item was wrong or damaged. In plain terms: you cannot try it and send it back. Decide before you open it.

Orlane ships free on orders over $100.

At these prices, that is not a question I can answer for you.

What I can do is tell you when the price moves. Orlane runs real sitewide sales a few times a year, and 20% off a $290 cream is $58 back in your pocket. That is the week to buy, not this one.
