How to read a beauty kit's value

You have heard "a $148 value" a thousand times, and nobody has ever shown you the arithmetic behind it.

Here it is. A stated value is the brand adding up what the pieces would cost bought one at a time. It is a claim, not a receipt. Sometimes it is exactly right. Sometimes it is built on a price nobody has paid in two years.

Checking it takes four minutes and one open tab.

Watch any beauty hour and the pitch runs in the same eight steps. Size first, price second, everything else after. That order is also the order to check a kit in.

Steps one, two and eight are the math. The rest is the reason to care.

Four pieces. Here is what each one costs on Perlier's own site today, bought singly.

So the kit is a genuine deal. It is also not a $163.50 one.

Perlier's stated value is $163.50. The four items add up to $157.00 right now. That is a $6.50 difference, and it is the ordinary kind: single prices move, and a bundle page does not always move with them.

A gap that size is bookkeeping. A gap of fifty or sixty dollars is a different conversation. When the stated value is far above what the pieces cost today, the brand is usually valuing them at a price that has not been charged in a long time, or counting a travel size at full size money.

There is a second kind of stated value, and HSN says out loud what it is. The network discloses on air that a super-size value is worked out from the price per ounce of the same product in a smaller size, and that it does not reflect a price HSN would sell the item for. That is a per-ounce calculation, not a price anyone was ever asked to pay.

Two more things that quietly change the math.

The shower cream comes in two sizes, 8.4 oz at $27.50 and 16.9 oz at $40.00. The kit has the big one. If you assumed the small one, you would have counted $27.50 and told yourself the set was worse than it is. Always match the ounces.

And you might read "3.3 oz hand butter" and assume it is a sample. It is not. It is the exact jar Perlier sells on its own for $26.00.

The return window is where a kit stops being a bargain.

Perlier takes returns within 30 days of delivery, in new or gently used condition, and charges a 15% restocking fee on approved returns. Discounted and promotional purchases come back as store credit, not money. This set is discounted, so that applies to it.

One more small thing worth knowing: Perlier ships free at $75 and the set is $74.95. You are five cents short of free shipping on a $75 threshold. Add a lip balm or pay the postage, but do not miss it by accident.

Ask these in this order and you will never overpay for a set again.
